Out on the fringe
The Cincinnati Fringe Festival features two pieces by gay performers who are no strangers to the Queen City: Les Kurkendaal, pictured, and Jeffrey Barnes.
Kurkendaal's Color Me Naked took the 2005 Cincinnati Fringe Festival by storm, and now he's back with Color Me Naked Vol. 2: Big, Black and Sassy, an examination of stereotypes. Meanwhile, Barnes, who did a presentation two years ago at the Cincinnati Youth Summit, will perform Remember Who Made You, a message of healing for gay Christians.
Big, Black and Sassy is a one-man show illustrating a series of events in Kurkendaal's life in which he deals with racism, homophobia or both, including a vignette taken from his trip to a Cincinnati City Council meeting last year.
Dealing humorously with painful issues, Color Me Naked Vol. 2: Big, Black and Sassy was met with packed houses in Los Angeles and at the Minnesota Fringe Festival.
Remember Who Made You, meanwhile, casts Barnes as Jesus, a father, a teenager and a minister, all trying to come to terms with the modern church's views on homosexuality. Big, Black and Sassy will be performed June 3 at 10:30 pm, June 7 and 9 at 7 pm, June 8 at pm and June 10 at 4 pm at the Contemporary Arts Center, 44 East 6th Street at Walnut. Remember Who Made You will be performed June 1, 7 and 9 at 7 pm, June 3 and 10 at 5 pm at Mr. Pitiful's, 1323 Main Street.
